Last night was pretty rough at our house. Connor has never been an all-star sleeper but for a few weeks now he has greatly improved. I cannot blame last night's events on his past sleep habits though.
I think it all started in the late afternoon when Matt took Connor & Avery for a short walk back behind our house. The back door was left open and I was in the living room folding laundry. All of the sudden I could hear my baby crying but from far away. I got up and met them at the back gate where Connor was very upset and Matt was pretty shaken up. Apparently they were walking down a steep area on loose gravel and slipped and fell. Neither one was badly injured, in fact Matt's ankle was slightly twisted but nothing major. Connor had no visible injuries and Matt said as far as he could tell he fell down onto his bottom or maybe his back and was mostly just scared. Matt described it as one of those out of body experiences where your mind works five times faster than your body. He said in the split second that he was falling he had the presence of mind to move Connor to the other side of his body and set him down as gently as possible while avoiding falling on him. Pretty amazing to me.
We went on to eat dinner, do a few puzzles and put Connor to bed. Because he is teething and was so shaken up from the fall, we gave him a half dose of Motrin. Matt and I went to bed and only a short time later (maybe 2 hours) were jolted out of sleep to hear our baby scream out in pain. Matt said he was already stirring because he had heard Connor whining but I was out cold. When Connor cried out though I jumped out of my bed and ran through the house faster than I have moved in months! I was sure he had fallen out of his crib or something. Also, Matt seemed way too calm for my liking. I was sure from the sound of his crying/sobbing/wailing that we were headed to the hospital for at least stitches if not more. When we got into his room, Connor was standing in his bed, not in pieces on the floor. Matt scooped him up while I flipped on the light to find the scorpion that I was now sure had caused this pain (see how the brain can work so much faster!) No sign of any bugs. Matt told me to come check Connor for signs of injury and sure enough as Connor removed the pacifier, a pool of blood came with it. We took him to the kitchen, cleaned his mouth and surveyed the damage.
From what we can tell he must have tripped while walking in his bed or something and slammed his upper jaw on the rail of the crib. His front teeth seem a little shorter than they were yesterday.
We cleaned him up, rocked and cuddled him and got him back to sleep. For a little while anyway. Around 4:30, once the Motrin wore off, he woke up again. Matt took care of that wake up call though. I slept!
Now that it is morning, Connor appears completely fine. Mommy & Daddy need a nap though!
